Havoc Heli Trim - A Simple Method For Controlling Forward Flight

Those of you who have purchased any of the Havoc Heli micro-heli flying machines made by Air Hogs are familiar with the problem of trim, especially right out of the box.

Getting the Havoc Heli to fly forward is not easy, and can be frustrating. This is due to the front to back "balance" of the heli being off. Here is a simple procedure that you can use to very effectively solve this problem.

It seems that most all of the Havoc Helis are tail heavy right from the manufacturer. What is needed for forward flight is a slight "nose down" condition, which will enable the heli to move forward. The instructions that came with the little Air Hogs toy say to add some metallic tape to the nose, but this is not all that easy or adjustable.

Supplies Needed to Adjust Trim:

One or two standard straight pins with large heads
One small package of medium glass beads (holes large enough to slide over straight pin)

Instructions:

Start by sliding 3 or 4 of the glass beads onto the pin. You don't want to use super tiny beads here because you are looking to add some weight. However, don't use beads that are too big that may slide right off the head of the pin.

Now, insert the pin containing the beads into the very tip of the nose of your Havoc Heli. Take your Heli for a test flight and notice the change in flying that the nose weight has produced.

If your heli is flying forward too fast now, you will want to remove a bead or two and then retest. If you still can't get sufficient forward motion from the heli, add some more beads, or you can even attach a second (or more) pins loaded with beads to produce the exact forward motion that you like.

This Havoc Heli trim technique has the advantage of being very quick and easy to adjust. You will be able to trim your micro-heli to the exact flying characteristics that you like. If you find it necessary to add quite a bit of weight, remember that it is better to use multiple pins instead of loading too many beads on one pin. This is because you want the pin to stay seated well in the Styrofoam nose so it won't fall out from a routine crash.

Happy flying!
